One of a Kind Blue

Tiny tendrils grasp ocean
floor, bright body ballooned
with warning. This little guy
is special, scientists say
as they pluck wonder
from the sand, collecting
its life for safe keeping.
Keeping as in: to scan, to measure,
to preserve its wild in a jar.
Safe as in: no expense spared to secure
the specimen, swaddle it still, swim
for data tucked behind silenced
beak and boneless limb, making
a killing to prove:We are pioneers! Don’t
you know, science is a goddamn
miracle? Humanity benefits
from the befallen. I am a believer. Yet
we tag such wonders FOUND, claim
the unownable ours – creatures
never meant to curl into
the reddened palms of those
whose hearts will never measure up.
